A Boy with Fears

Scott was 10 years old when he came to see me. He was having problems getting to sleep at night because he was scared of people breaking into his home. He was also afraid of dying and of being killed. It was worse when he was alone. When he heard on the news that a young girl was missing and then found dead, he was afraid someone would come and take him. He asked, “Why do people go missing?” Generally he was sensitive and caring, especially when his parents had recently been sick. He could also be very loving to little other children and to babies. “He just doesn’t seem to feel loved and often says ‘you don’t love me’ yet we have always told him we love him,” said his mother.

He thought his room was too dark and the ceiling was too high. Having the light on didn’t help. He was generally timid e.g. he desperately wanted to play hockey on a new turf but when he got there he didn’t want to go on. His mother said he was sometimes very bold and brave and other times he was very timid. His behaviour could change quickly. I observed that he was very nervous and shy. His mother spoke for him. Even talking about his favourite foods was difficult for him.

He was not able to be breastfed because his mother’s milk didn’t come in. After his 15 month immunization he had a bad reaction . He had his tonsils out when he was 3 years old. He had very sore throats in the first three years, and was always ‘nasally’ with swollen adenoids. As a toddler he had “supermarket tandrums” when he would be very stubborn. He now often gets very bad bloody noses especially on hot days. At night he sweats a lot around his trunk and head, especially in the summer.

Based on the presenting symptoms, especially his timid nature, I prescribed a homeopathic medicine called Calc carb. His mother reported that after the medicine he didn’t seem worried about things any more and became more confident. Two months later he began to feel the symptoms coming back and he asked for a repeat of the medicine. The symptoms disappeared again after the second dose and he hasn’t needed any more.
