Colic and Reflux in Babies

Homeopathic treatment can be a real life-saver for parents at a time when they are concerned to find some relief for their baby’s pain. Often parents have tried a wide range of therapies by the time homeopathic treatment is sought. Some parents seek homeopathic treatment because they would like to reduce the level of medication their baby is on.

Homeopathy is often first sought in a child’s life for colic or digestive problems, spilling and silent reflux. A number of babies will present with both gut problems and silent reflux or spilling.

Case: Arlo 5 weeks of age

Presenting with stomach pain, Arlo was getting very upset anytime from 5:00 pm until 1:00 am, screaming and very distressed. While in this state he was frowning and grimacing in pain. He was writhing, arching his back, throwing his head backwards and screaming. The pain seemed to come in waves and his mother said his gut felt very tight.

She reported that Arlo was better during the daytime due to stretching Arlo’s feeds out. He used to sleep for a short time and wake wanting more milk. The evenings, however, were very bad. Arlo would need to be carried and rocked. Bringing up wind took much longer in the evenings.

Generally, Arlo took his time to feed, guzzling then resting. He hiccoughed after feeding. His mother found that eating cruciferous vegetables, chocolate, cheese and shellfish would aggravate Arlo’s stomach problem. As a result she had already cut these foods and caffeine out of her diet.

The homeopathic treatment

Arlo was prescribed a homeopathic remedy suitable for unbearable pain in babies or children who tend to back arch and are difficult to console. Babies scream with anger and are restless. They demand to be carried (fast rather than slowly) and cannot be comforted. They want things which are then rejected, so they drive their parents crazy. These babies want to be carried and rocked. The abdomen and stomach are bloated and the pains are unbearable and severe.

His mother was advised to give one dose of the remedy initially and to repeat the remedy if the symptoms returned.

Response

Arlo needed 3 doses of the remedy over a week after which he was no longer in pain and much more settled.
